Bulgarian Iconography Coin Series Features “The Virgin Mary Wayshower” the Bulgarian

 

The obverse of the coin features the logo of the Bulgarian National Bank with the year ‘1879’ on the ribbon. Inscriptions around the outer circumference of the coin read ‘БЪЛГАРСКА НАРОДНА БАНКА’ (Bulgarian National Bank), ‘2011’, and ‘20 ЛЕВА’ (BGN 20).
Depicted on the reverse is a fragment of the Sozopol icon ‘The Virgin Hodegetria’ (XIV – XV centuries) from St. John the Theologian Church. The Virgin Mary is shown holding Christ on her her left arm and gesturing towards him with her right hand, showing that he is the way to salvation. The inscription reads’ (The Virgin Mary Wayshower). The design of the coin is by Ivan Todorov and Todor Vardzhiev.
Each coin is struck in .999 gold with a weight of 1.55 grams. The diameter is 13.92 with a flat edge. The mintage for the issue is 6,000. The coins are available for sale at Bulgarian National Bank cash desks for BGN 180 excluding VAT.
